Maybe we were trying to respect Glenn's book choice and that's why our conversation was fairly positive about the book. But down deep I don't think Stephenson gained many converts. Hence the 5.8.
I think Kennedy will be a good read for us. We've sampled depressing writing with The Sea and The Road, but Ironweed I gather is depressing as much for its time and place as for its characters and their complications. Garth has already warned us that we are apt to be served stone soup by Terry. That'll take us right back to upstate NY during the Depression.
Terry, be sure to supplement our diet with a little post-Prohibition liquor!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6367682155970735252.post-57646608343076354822008-08-04T05:35:00.000-07:002008-08-04T05:35:00.000-07:00Men of ManBook-I continue to love your meeting wri...Men of ManBook-

I continue to love your meeting write ups and would do something similar for Great Apes gatherings if I was fortunate enough to attend more of them.

We've never done that well with reading and discussing sci fi either. Maybe there just isn't that much to talk about in the genre or maybe there's too much that appeals (or doesn't appeal)either to the sci or the fi afficiando!

I will be interested in your take on Ironweed. It's depressing but I remember really liking Kennedy's "Albany trilogy" as it was released in the 80s. I was born in Albany but only lived there until I was seven so I couldn't connect to very many places, but the characters are recognizable in any time or place . . .kind of that underbelly that often goes unnoticed or untouted, ala Algren. Kennedy does a nice job helping us see (if not appreciate) them. Plenty to discuss in there and maybe some of you will be able to see the movie (Meryl Streep?) as well as read the novel before September.

Read on!Jeffhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16659858335748179668noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6367682155970735252.post-57035378893279771712008-07-28T18:08:00.000-07:002008-07-28T18:08:00.000-07:00I stand corrected. The county (city?) government is less constrained by simple math so our house number is actually 7 Biscayne Court. Go figger.

TerryTerryAhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03018876366623955137noreply@blogger.com
